Let’s touch on the importance of gear really quick. I feel like a lot of people get into the craze of the next new thing that comes out (myself included), but the truth is you don’t need that thing whatever it may be. I’ve been using the same camera with the same lenses for the past 2 1/2 years. I only shoot with a Panasonic GH4 and I have 3 Quasar Science Tubes to light my scenes.

You shouldn’t blame gear or the lack of gear for holding you back. The only thing that will ever hold you back is yourself. Just get out there and create with what you have, and get good with that. Eventually you’ll end up charging more for projects and you’ll be able to invest back into your gear. Let’s talk about that for a second lol.

So as I’ve progressed throughout 2018 one of my goals was to invest in a new, updated camera. Instead I decided not to invest in a camera, but invest in everything else. I invested in lighting, gimbals, cages, light stands, generators, computers, etc. I did that because I know how to get a good image out of the camera that I have and now I’ve invested in things that will make my image look even better.

I’ve also invested time in education such as learning how to color correct and grade my footage so I know I’m getting the most out of my footage. Learning how to move the camera and tell a story, learning how to light for different scenes and create different moods, that’s more important than running to the next camera. Don’t get me wrong I’m investing in a new camera when 2019 rolls around, but the point is to learn to shoot with what you have, and then when you’re ready, upgrade.

I’m going to have some content coming out in the future talking about what gear I would specifically recommend so look forward to that!
